Short history of VATICAN CHAPELS
On the occasion of the Venetian 16th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale, in 2018 the Holy See participated for the first time in the Biennale Architettura with a pavilion spread over the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Promoted by His Eminence Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, coordinated by the Pontifical Council for Culture, designed and curated by Prof. Francesco Dal Co and Dr. Micol Forti, the project is inspired by the "chapel in the woods" by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund, built in 1920 in the Stockholm cemetery.
The project: ten architects of proven experience, bearers of different sensibilities, have designed as many chapels in the evocative forest of the Giorgio Cini Foundation at the end of the Venetian island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Investigating the possibilities offered by different materials, the architects were invited to reflect on the theme of the Chapel as a "place of orientation, encounter, meditation and greeting", as Asplund called its "chapel in the woods". The small churches are greeted by the natural environment of the Foundation's forest, characterised only by its emergence from the lagoon and its opening onto the water. The Vatican Chapels represent a spiritual, religious and even secular journey, a visit to the peace of nature where distance is not a problem but an intrinsic value of experience.
THE MUSICAL PROJECT "VATICAN CHAPELS - A soundtrack experience".
A place so rich in inspiration and full of spirituality could not leave indifferent the sensitivity of a musician and composer like Antonio Fresa, known for the soundtracks made for cinema and TV, candidate for David di Donatello and Nastri d'Argento as best musician for Gatta Cenerentola, and always passionate author of evocative music for images. The idea of creating the Vatican Chapels soundtrack was born from the vision of Ilaria D'Uva, the Florentine entrepreneur who with D'Uva - her company, operating since 1959 in the development of technology and museum services in Italy - manages the service of guided tours of the Giorgio Cini Foundation and the forest with the Vatican Chapels and is also responsible for the opening of the San Giorgio Café with Filippo La Mantia, the island's bistro. The musical project not only becomes the vibrant soundtrack of the audio guides to the Vatican Chapels, on the occasion of the reopening to the public of this evocative place, but is also published on all digital streaming and download platforms.
Antonio Fresa has worked on 11 compositions, one dedicated to each chapel plus a theme reserved for the Asplund Pavilion. Designed by architects Francesco Magnani and Traudy Pelzel, the Pavilion was designed as a prelude to the exhibition itinerary where the model - created for the occasion - and reproductions of Gunnar Asplund's original drawings are displayed.
The protagonists of Fresa's compositions are mainly the piano and strings, with the contribution of a few other instruments. Evocative at maximum power, very pleasant, "VATICAN CHAPELS - A soundtrack experience" never overwhelms the beauty of Chapels, entering instead as a driving force. The audio guided tour of the Vatican Chapels thus acquires an extraordinary cultural added value, giving visitors a special immersive experience that adds beauty to beauty.
The music was performed and directed by Antonio Fresa between Naples, Milan and Paris, recorded at the Splash Studio by Massimo Aluzzi and Andrea Cutillo.
The album was mixed and mastered by Paolo Iafelice in the Milanese studios of Adesiva Discografica, the label that publishes the album, together with D'Uva, and which stands out for the care it dedicates to the selection and production of its titles.
"VATICAN CHAPELS - A soundtrack experience" is distributed by Self Distribuzione. The executive production is by Ilaria D'Uva.
